Congratulations to the team for their hard work and performance at the island wide tournament. Our team members are Sejon Takenaka, Max Hiliard, Taelee Kimaura, Maile Mijares, Teirnan Keahoe, Wyatt Harrison, Noa Harrison and  Kelta O’Rourke . The  team works two days a week after school with Mrs. Chung.

The following is quoted from the Sunday Nov. 21, 2010 edition of  Garden Island.com:

“The Kilauea LEGO Team from Kilauea School won the  Captain’s Award for innovative robot design at the 3rd Annual Kauai District FLL Tournament, Saturday at the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School cafeteria.

The tournament featured 12 robotic teams representing eight elementary schools and two middle schools from around the island, said Mia Ako, tournament chair from the Kaua‘i Economic Development Board.

The day centered around two phases: the project phase and the robot game.

Utilizing this year’s Body Forward theme, teams had an opportunity to explore the cutting-edge world of biomedical engineering to discover innovative ways to repair injuries, overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body’s potential with the intended purpose of leading happier, healthier lives.

This theme overflowed into the robot game where, using Lego Mindstorms NXT kits, teams could amass points by accomplishing various tasks within a 2.5-minute  period.

Missions included common bone repair, rapid blood screening, bad cell destruction, cardiac patch, nerve mapping, bionic eyes, and more, each task earning from five to 25 points on successful completion.”
